Lynn Book, FF Alumn, presents voice labs in December, 2001
Dear friends and associates,
If you're like me, you're a little weary at this moment in time. It's a damn challenging passage we are in - all of us - and there're lots of reasons to sequester into the long arms of winter - some of us have the privilege of making that choice. Consider voice as a rejuvenating force that brings vitality to flagging spirits - yours and others. It's amazing, it's radical, the immediate and most positive results of tuning in and singing out. You will be heard (and felt) 'round the world.
I do also want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the amazing group of women who participated in beg: a question in progress that was performed with fervor in October. Thanks to the chorus: Allison Farrow, Astrid Lewis-Reedy, Eleanor Dubinsky, Anitra Brooks, Catherine Rogers, Andrea Halverson, Nancy Brandt, Lehni Davies, Jocelyn Meltzer, Vicki Genfan and Bekah Barnett. And special thanks to Diane Torr and Elke Bartholomeus for their supporting roles. This is a strong project with plenty more performances left in it and ever so timely, so if anyone knows of a performance opportunity, don't hesitate to contact me.
In spirit,
Lynn Book
Sounding the World
December 6 & 13 from 6:30 - 9
Fee - $105 (deposit $50 by Dec 3)
Location - TBA
A mini-lab surveying voice cultures from around the world and across time. We will give a listen to ancient, unscored, ritualistic modes to contemporary, improvisatory approaches to the voice as a truly multi-faceted instrument that embodies the desires, despairs and dreams of a culture. This is a great opportunity to gain a meaningful overview of some remarkable vocal, performative & singing styles. As a participant, you will try techniques and learn some scales and even a song or three! A complete discography of the recordings that we listen to will be provided as well as other resources for locating the not so easily detectable in 'world' vocal music.

Coming up in January
2002
Voicelab 1 - Wednesdays, Jan 30 - March 6
Voicelab 2 - Thursdays, Jan 31 - March 7
And in February
LOOP has a new format that will provide for more focused attention to the development
of the founding ideas you have and on various strategies for realizing your
ideas in performance. It includes beginning with a period of cultivation in
early February with time in between group meetings to work more in depth on
your own. This initial incubation period will be on four alternating Saturdays:
February 2nd and 16th, and March 2nd and 16th (how's that for symmetry?). This
will be followed by a series of 6 consecutive Saturdays beginning March 30th
and continuing through May 4th where you will work more on production issues
of performance qualities and techniques and provide you with time to 'workshop'
the piece with the group. The values are many for this lab, providing you with
an opportunity to create an original performance work for voice, sharpening
your critical and directorial skills, engaging in a shared environment that
supports creative process. And last but certainly not least, your work is part
of a fully produced public event at a downtown space in New York City. The performance
will occur sometime in mid-May.
