For Immediate Release

Martha Wilson, Founding Director of Franklin Furnace, will chair a panel in two sections entitled "The Archives of the Avant-Garde (Archiving the Non-Archival)" for the annual conference of the College Art Asssociation being held in New York at the end of February 2000. Papers by artists and scholars will be presented on Friday, February 25 and Saturday, February 26. This panel was organized to discuss the growing concern regarding the fate of archival materials produced during the last several decades, especially documentation related to "problematic" art. Its purpose will be to convene a discussion on the value of archival materials for historical, pedagogical, artistic, and other uses within the cultural sector; and the decision making process used to select which items will be conserved:

-- Production of archival materials by artists, representatives of artists, organizations, art dealers, public and private foundations;

-- Collection and preservation of such materials by librarians, archivists, and museum curators;

-- Accessibility and use afforder by artists, teachers, scholars, students and information technology personnel.

Such a discussion will by necessity include the economic and political context within which archival materials relating to avant-garde art practice are being gathered or ignored.
