REPOHISTORY CIRCULATION:
MAPPING HUMAN BLOOD IN NEW YORK CITY
MAGNETIC ART IN CITY STREETS and "ADJUSTED" METROCARDS
April 30, 2000
Look closely at the city streets and sidewalks in the weeks ahead and you may discover magnetic art works depicting human medical guinea pigs. The magnet-works are by artist Kevin Pyle and cling to city lampposts and other metal urban objects. They are one part of REPOhistory's public art project CIRCULATION. If you look around the streets and subway stations you might also discover a self-stick, post-card by Greg Sholette. Cut the small box on the right hand side and peel this away from its orange background. Apply this to the back side of your MetroCard in place of the advertising space. While you can not re-charge your newly "mutated" MetroCard, you can use what funds are already on it at most turnstiles in the MTA system.
AND this is not the end of the project. You are encouraged to become a "collaborator" in CIRCULATION by visiting our website at WWW.REPOHISTORY.ORG.
CIRCULATION investigates the economic,
historic, and cultural significance of human blood and the layers of social
meaning that it engenders. The aim of CIRCULATION is to focus public awareness
about this essential human resource and the unseen urban systems connected to
it; and to explore the ethics surrounding the emerging field of biotechnology.
REPOhistory is a ten-year-old art collaborative that maps forgotten events,
people, and sites through public art projects in New York City and around the
country.
