What is STRANGE BIRDS?
Strange Birds is an amplified chamber opera set in the primordial future. Four singers stripped of conventional dramatic situation, communicate using a vocabulary of wordless melodic fragments. Around them swirls a volatile environment of sonic weather, dissapearing walls and cosmic mirages.

Inspired by bird song, the vocal lines consist of lyrical, often eliptical, gestures sung according to the individual breath of each singer, evoking a multiplicitous ebb and flow of human intercourse. Diebes constructed his orchestra by manipulating and combining small samples from vinyl recordings of orchestral music, creating a wide range of textures which he mixes live during the performance.

The visual environment by technical artist Jeff Sugg merges 19th century mechanical and illusion concepts with contemporary imaging technologies. Costumes are created by Wandjina. The cast features accomplished classical singers: Galienne Eriksen, soprano; Vielka Kelly, mezzo-soprano; Daniel Neer, tenor; and John Rose, baritone.
