Louise Liliefedlt is a Toronto-based performance and visual artist born in Cape Town, South Africa. She has presented her work across Canada as well as in Chicago, Poland and Turkey. Liliefeldt is a co-founder of 7a*11d International Festival of Performance Art which to date has featured over 140 local and international artists.
Liliefeldt's work is predominately concerned with the politics of identity, gender and race. Monumental imagery is created by the use of metaphors, symbols and the interactions of sound, light and colour. It examines the cultural conventions of spectatorship, personal experience and the links between them.
SPECIMEN is a look into the mind's eye of the artist. Liliefeldt has created an atmosphere that invites the spectator to experience the symbolic representation of selective memory, social commentary and personal history. In this charged environment, time appears to have slowed down. As visitors enter the space, they are surrounded by ten large paintings, a tableau performance, sound and video projections. Stasis is a key component in these elements which combine iconographic imagery and physical experience.
W.A. Davidson created
the sound for SPECIMEN and presents a video projection in the project room.
