RETURN
A New Work by J Mandle Performance
At GAle GAtes et al. 37 Main Street, DUMBO, Brooklyn
Opening December 5, 2001
Brooklyn, NY: J Mandle Performance (JMP), a Brooklyn-based experimental arts organization, will premiere RETURN, a large- scale production developing the group=92s exploration of both spatial and conceptual themes through their trademark costume defined choreography.
RETURN explores the concept of time and how simple choices resonate through the rest of people's lives. The performance is inspired by the story of a lost WWII Air Force navigator who now finds himself stranded in the present. He travels through the distressed landscapes of his mind, as the audience follows along with him from one performance space to the next. For the first time, JMP, which usually creates site-specific works in unconventional outdoor spaces, will perform indoors, constructing several performance installations with innovative costumes, movement, and sound design.
RETURN represents the next step in our exploration of space and movement design,=94 said Julia Mandle, founder and director of J Mandle Performance. RETURN was developed during the Fall 2000 and was presented as a work in progress during JMP=92s July 2001 outdoor benefit event FIRE ESCAPE 4 at the Old American Can Factory in collaboration with three dancers/aerialists from the off-Broadway show, De La Guarda. After making its premiere at GAle GAtes et al. in December, RETURN will be adapted for two excerpt performances at BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange, January 4-5, 2002.
J Mandle Performance is a not-for-profit arts organization founded in 1996 by visual artist Julia Mandle. Previous performances include ERIKA at Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum (7/00), SIX SQUARE at Storefront for Art and Architecture (9/99), and WHEN at New Museum of Contemporary Art (7/99).
