A Book Unveiling/Presentation/Tit-Printing event
at Printed Matter, Inc.
Thursday, November 8, 2001, 5 to 7 PM
Printed Matter is pleased to announce a book launch and book signing/tit-print event to celebrate the publication of Hardcore from the Heart: The Pleasures, Profits and Politics of Sex in Performance by Annie Sprinkle and Gabrielle Cody to be held at Printed Matter, Inc. on November 8, from 5 to 7 PM.

Pornography, on or off the stage, is an inflammatory issue and one that is deeply linked to theatrical representation throughout history. But what happens to the notions of the pornographic when a female performer subverts the conventional models of pornographic representation by reclaiming the agency of her own body?

This is exactly what sex industry worker and performance artist Annie Sprinkle attempts through her courageous and challenging work. By locating her discourse on her own body, she refers to herself as a "post-porn modernist." However, Sprinkle's complication of the power relations inherent in representation acts‹the "exploited" theatrical viewing of the explicit body as it were‹raises important theoretical issues. When is the female body not in a prostituted relationship to representational structures? Is the spectator always a voyeur? Why is "post-porn modernism" still not endorsed by many brands of feminism? In order to structure a conversation about these issues, Hardcore from the Heart (Continuum / $19.95 paperback) not only comprises a critical introduction to Sprinkle's later theater work and essays, but also includes several interviews with artists who have worked closely with Sprinkle over the years.

Annie Sprinkle is a performance artist, porn star, and sex industry worker. She has just received her Doctorate of Human Sexuality from the Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality and is now a Certified Sexologist. She lives in Sausalito, California. Editor Gabrielle Cody is an art critic and Assistant Professor of Drama at Vassar College.

Both Sprinkle and Cody will read from, discuss and sign (or in Sprinkle's case, tit-print) copies of Hardcore from the Heart: The Pleasures, Profits and Politics of Sex in Performance at Printed Matter on Thursday, November 8. A champagne reception will follow. Also, a bus will depart from Printed Matter at the conclusion of the event for Rhizome Remix @ Galapagos Celebrating Franklin Furnace's 25th Year! Champagne at both Printed Matter and at Galapagos is courtesy of Mumm Cuvée Napa.

Printed Matter, Inc. is located at 535 West 22nd Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues. For additional information regarding the exhibition and Printed Matter, Inc. please contact David Platzker, Director of Printed Matter, at (212) 925-0325.
