André Stitt¹s work as a performance artist draws on a wide number of references, ranging from urban alienation to alternative religions to political upheaval. Starting with his first performances about the troubles whilst at art school in Belfast in the seventies and his work with Tara Babel, through to his television appearances in the late-eighties and his most recent work to date, this publication charts Stitt¹s career using images from the artist¹s own archive as well as specially commissioned documentation. Stitt provides the context to his work from the last two decades with texts that link the various projects with his personal life, creating an invaluable document of an extreme and flamboyant career.
André Stitt was born in Belfast in 1958 and has been living in London since 1980. Since 1976 he has produced over 300 unique performances in galleries, festivals, alternative venues and public spaces throughout the world. Stitt has also been active as a writer for the underground press and is a founder member of Exploding Cinema. Stitt is currently senior lecturer of Time Based Practice at the University of Wales Institute in Cardiff.
