The paradox of space is that because it is assumed to be organic and amorphous, then it must be neutral. This perception of space has more to do with our social and cultural constructs of it rather than the assumption that it innately exits objectively outside the sphere of human experience. Certainly the laws of physics in regards to space are, for the most part, absolute. Yet what was once thought of as unshakable truths concerning space have been re-modified as new theories reconfigure our ideas of it. This brief sketching of space has not addressed the psychological affectation of space and its deployment in art.
Agoraphobia and claustrophobia are just two examples of how space influences the mind. Space is also imperative for the construction of works of art, be they realistic or purely abstract, be it painting or video. The articulation of space within art also betrays the cultural and historical specificity of its formulation. Think, for instance, about the Renaissance perspective model that was schematized by Leon Battista Alberti in his painting as window paradigm. Since seeing out a window into the world was thought to be natural, then basing a theory of painting on such a model would surely legitimate its universality. Other cultures, however, smash this window by conceptualizing space in much different terms that exemplifies its social construction. This exhibition uses mixed media works by a diverse array of international artists that explore constructions of space and the effects it has in our lives. To achieve this, artists in this exhibition work with space as a strong formal element in addressing particular concerns that are articulated conceptually. These concerns can be personal, political/ideological, as well as generally social.
