The last several decades have seen the avant-garde stir the soul of our culture and fuel debate throughout the society. Franklin Furnace seeks to capture -- through preserving archival materials and fostering their use -- the fertile time in avant-garde art history during the 70s, the politically volatile time during the 80s and early 90s, and artists' use of the Internet as an art medium and venue in the new millennium. Franklin Furnace believes that a record of this time needs to be preserved for the study of future generations, and also that the story needs to be told to audiences today to aid understanding of how our culture has changed through the activities of the avant-garde. |
