Raphaela Olive, who last spring was a 5th grade student at P.S. 20 in Franklin Furnace’s Sequential Art for Kids photography workshop taught by Doug Beube, won first prize in the Elementary School category in a City-wide competition for student photographers sponsored by The New York City Department of Education. On Friday, October 17th, 2008, Chancellor Joel Klein presented awards to 20 students in Elementary, Middle and High School whose work was selected from among 500 submissions. An exhibition of the prizewinning works, “PS Architecture,” is currently on view at the Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place, 9AM-8PM Monday through Friday, and Saturday, 11AM-5PM; admission is free. The Center for Architecture Foundation plans to publish a book which will use a composite photograph of the winning images on its cover.
Congratulations, Raphaela! Thanks to teaching artist Doug Beube; her classroom teacher Ms. Dixon; and Principal Sean Keaton, who selected ten images for submission to the PS Architecture competition.
Franklin Furnace gratefully acknowledges with thanks the 2007-08 supporters of Sequential Art for Kids: New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Milton and Sally Avery Arts Foundation, The Cowles Charitable Trust, Independence Community Foundation, JPMorgan Chase Foundation, and The New York Times Company Foundation.
